Striving for Sustainability

At Scholastic, our fundamental objective is to inspire a love of reading and learning in kids everywhere. However, we also believe that minimising our environmental impact is our responsibility. This drives us to continually investigate ways to reduce our carbon footprint through environmental initiatives.

OUR BOOK CLUB CATALOGUES

PRINTING
Our catalogues are printed in Australia by printers who work to the highest national standards and actively promote and utilise environmentally responsible practices, and are PEFC and FSC approved.

INKS
The ink used on the catalogues contains renewable content, including soy and vegetable oils.

PAPER
All paper in our Book Club catalogues is 100% PEFC certified and sourced from plantation forests only, once the tree is harvested it is then re-grown again. Over 99% of the materials used to produce the catalogues are recycled.

Over 90% of Australia’s commercial native forest operations are independently certified to comply with the world’s best sustainable forest management practices compared to the global average of 8% – Australian Forest Production Association, 2020

OUR PACKAGING

  • We use 100% recycled material for our protective air pillows for packaging.
  • All our Cardboard Packaging is made from 100% recycled material. They are all totally recyclable.
  • Single use plastics have been removed from our internal bundling, package and waste practices.
  • Internal bundling of packs and boxed sets will only use recyclable and biodegradable materials.
  • We now only use Plastic Bags that are biodegradable rather than made of recycled material.

We are committed to providing a safer and happier future and healthier planet for our children and are continually looking for areas to improve our environmental sustainability.

Australian Made Books

We strive to produce sustainable books and paper products that are locally sourced, written, designed, and produced
here in Australia.

AUSTRALIAN AUTHORS AND ILLUSTRATORS
Scholastic Australia Publishing has always been committed to seeking out, fostering and supporting new and emerging Australian authors and illustrators, as well as promoting well established ones to produce many excellent Australian books. Of course, in addition to developing and nurturing home-grown talent, our team selects titles from many great international authors and illustrators as well. We are proud of the fact that many of our Australian books have been selected and published because of the support of our partnering schools through Book Club and Book Fairs. Otherwise, we may have missed out on some fantastic stories and talents.

AUSTRALIAN PRINTING
Scholastic Australia chooses to print books in Australia wherever practical. We use printers that are committed to minimising the environmental impact of their operations and products by adopting the principle of continuous improvement in environmental performance.

AUSTRALIAN PAPER
With paper being the No.1 raw material used in producing books, we are 100% committed to reducing our environmental impact and endeavour every day to minimise our carbon footprint. We make every effort to use papers produced in Australia with Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certifications. The FSC ensures forests are managed in a way that considers animals, plants, workers, local communities and indigenous land rights through constant monitoring and assessment.

Scholastic Australia will continue to support home-grown Authors and Illustrators and to produce locally printed books on Australian paper wherever possible for the benefit of all Australians and the environment.
