Scholastic was founded in Pittsburgh USA in 1920 by Maurice R (Robbie) Robinson, a graduate with a vision to bring the world into the classroom. From its small foundations as a publisher of an educational magazine for high school students, Scholastic has grown to become one of the largest publishers and distributors of children's books, educational materials, multimedia and creative properties in the world.

Dick Robinson, son of Scholastic's founder, Maurice R Robinson, is the Chairman, President and CEO of Scholastic.

Wholly owned operations in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom have original trade and educational publishing programs, and along with Scholastic companies in Argentina, India and Mexico, distribute children's books, software and other materials through school-based book clubs, book fairs and trade channels. Scholastic also operates in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, The Philipines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand.
