Steven Woolman

Illustrator

After completing a degree in Graphic Design and Illustration, Steven Woolman went to work for a publisher where for eight years he designed all of their books and illustrated some.

One of his early books, The Watertower, written by Gary Crew, was short-listed for ABPA Design Awards, became 1995 Picture Book of the Year (Children’s Book Council of Australia), 1998 Best Book of the Year (USA School Library Journal) and has received many children’s choice awards. In The Watertower much of the science fiction element was provided by Steven’s intriguing design and illustration. Steven has subsequently won many awards including the IBBY Ena Noel Award for his work.

Steven now works as a full-time illustrator from his home studio at Kensington Park, a leafy suburb of Adelaide. He employs a variety of styles and media, working with acrylics, chalk and pencil as well as generating images with his computer. Science fiction, horror and ’twisted’ tales are his favourites and his artwork often reflects one of his best-loved pastimes, watching old movies.
